RUS x Li Hui

Blurring the boundaries between art and the everyday, Chinese photographer Li Hui’s unique ability to capture the nature of human emotions and fleeting moments of intimacy in her images specially resonates with RUS universe and particularly this season’s Senses Perception design element, wrapped silhouettes and ruched knitted fabrics hug the body in an intimate embrace.

Where’s home for you?
Home is a place where I can feel peaceful, and enjoy the beautiful sunsets and be surrounded by loved ones.

What led you to start working with photography?
For me, photography has always been a way to break free from the constraints of my own self-consciousness and tap into something deeper within myself. The moment I first held a film camera in my hands, I knew that I had found a tool that would allow me to express myself in ways that words simply couldn’t. Through my photography, I’m able to create a whole that is entirely my own, one that invites others to step into realm of imagination.

What sort of imagery and shapes do you feel attracted to?
I’m drawn to a variety of shapes and forms that evolve from the foundation of the circle.

How important is the power of imagination?
As a visual person, I rely on the power of imagination to craft images that capture the essence of a moment and stir the viewer’s emotions, this has a significant impact on my personal styles. Without imagination, artworks can feel hollow and lifeless, lacking the power to move and inspire.

What’s your inspiration for this collaboration?

My inspiration for this collaboration stems from a fascination with the unnoticed details. I explore the texture of fabrics and discover patterned clues that lie within through movement on the body. To me, they resemble the curves of endless mountains or the waves of overlapping seas, or even the glimmers of light that appear at night. I perceive these images through my senses and allow them to inspire my work.

How would you describe RUS universe in three words?

Equilibrium, tender, intuitive.

There is a great consideration for intimacy and the female figure in your work, do you feel this is something that defines you?
I believe that my work naturally reflects my concerns with intimacy and the female form. I recognize that every woman has a unique perspective and approach to these topics, and I’m interested into delving deeper into the mystical side.

Planification or improvisation?
Improvisation. My creative process begins with a seed of inspiration, but I allow the environment and my emotions to guide me towards the final outcome.

What musical artist/album/song are you currently listening to on repeat?

Right now I’m listening Everything perfect is already here by Claire Rousay.

Do you find useful following a routine or do you prefer to follow your emotional impulses?

I find it useful to follow a routine, and in general, I tend to follow certain rules and structure in most things. Having a stable foundation ensures that I don’t get lost in emotional impulses sometimes.

Do you have any ritual that can transform your mood in an instant?

A quick and easy way for me is by listening to music. It always works for me.

Name three artists/creatives that inspire you. Why?

There are so many, but right now my inspiration comes from Méret Oppenheim for her quirkiness and unconventional use of materials, blurring the boundaries between art and everyday objects; Agnes Lawrence Pelton for her unique blend of mystical geometry and color that creates ethereal and otherworldly landscapes; and Lynne Ramsay for her subtle attention to detail and ability to capture the subtleties of human emotion in her films.

What’s your favourite season to get dressed?

Late spring. It’s not too cold, and everything is coming back to life, showing its diversity. The wildness of summer is awakening as well, making it a great time to experiment with different styles and looks.

If you could design the future world, what elements would you include?
I first need to decipher the mysterious language of my feline companion :)

What’s on your horizon?

I’m focused on finishing up my next book, which I’ve been putting off for a while now due to some personal emotions. I hope to make it happen sooner.
