‘Shadow means your life is filled with sun.'

Friend and muse Hsin-Ying Ho, co-founder of Berlin-based ceramics and interior design studio Yellow Nose, shares with us personal insights on motherhood and the precious little rituals she enjoys with her daughter Muyi.

‘Shadow means your life is filled with sun.'

I am often asked by friends around me if the love of being a mother is really different, and I can never put into words exactly what that love is, and how I feel about it.

I enjoy all the little moments of my life with her in it. The moments at the dinner table, the moments in the studio when I scribble and play clay with her, the moments on the balcony when we feel the soil warmed by the sun on the first day of spring.

She watches me go about my life, and she grows up like a shadow beside me.

I came across a poem one day, and there was a passage that read:

"Don't you ever get weary

As, day after day.

Your two little tagalongs

Get in your way?"

She smiled as she shook

Her pretty young head.

And I'll always remember

The words that she said.

"It's good to have shadows

That run when you run.

That laugh when you're happy

And hum when you hum-

For you only have shadows

When your life's filled with sun."

It describes the love I have since becoming a mother, the sun that is in my life.
